First trailer for 'The English Teacher' starring Julianne Moore

Having proven he can successfully handle large, talented ensembles by directing episodes of Weeds and The Big C, Craig Zisk has pulled together an impressive cast for his feature debut, The English Teacher. Julianne Moore, Michael Angarano, Greg Kinnear, and Lily Collins star in the indie dramedy, which has been in the works for a couple of years but is now starting to gain steam as it prepares to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The first trailer for the film has been released, and it looks like a cousin to the Tina Fey comedy, Admission. Moore plays a high school English teacher, unlucky in love and dedicated to her job, who agrees to help a former student (Angarano) put on his stageplay after he failed to make it big as a playwright. Some wacky romantic entanglements complicate her life, which only gets worse as the school refuses to put on the play.

Like Admission, this may be an instance where the lead performance is superior to the unfocused material. The tone is all over the map, leaning heavily on screwball antics at one point then calling on Moore to get serious the next. She looks to be at the top of her game, as always, and the supporting cast is strong enough that the film could still be an easy-going charmer. The English Teacher hits theaters on May 17th after a VOD opening on April 16th.
