First trailer for 'Romeo & Juliet' starring Hailee Steinfeld and Paul Giamatti
Between the countless stage productions, TV specials, and film adaptations, there is nothing that has been adapted more than Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Every story of doomed young lovers from opposing sides of the tracks owes something to it, and the trick has been trying to find ways to keep it fresh. But that doesn't seem to be the goal for the latest version being brought to the big screen, which features a script by Downton Abbey scribe, Julian Fellowes
The first trailer for Romeo & Juliet has arrived, and it looks like a fairly traditional take on the material with brief glimpses of Downton Abbey intrigue. In her first major role since True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld stars along with Douglas Booth as the ill-fated lovers, with Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence and Homeland star Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet. The cast is all around terrific with Kodi Smit-McPhee, Natascha McElhone, Lesley Manville, and Stellan Skarsgard joining in.
Even with this much talent, the trailer doesn't have a lot of energy, and there's a sense of "been there, done that". Perhaps a large part of the reason it doesn't look especially inventive is that it was directed by Carlo Carlei, whose claim to fame was 1995's puppy dog comedy, Fluke. Romeo & Juliet opens in the U.K. in July but doesn't have a U.S. release date yet.
