Chilling trailer for 'Europa Report' with Sharlto Copley

Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity may have the special effects budget and the high-powered stars, but the indie sci-fi film Europa Report may have it beat with authenticity and chilling atmosphere. Word on it has been fairly quiet since it was announced a couple of years ago, but as the summer release date approaches and more glimpses emerge, a buzz is starting to build for the film which has Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Michael Nyqvist (Disconnect) as its two biggest names.

Director Sebastian Cordero worked closely with NASA and other groups to make Europa Report as genuine as possible, and it's certainly reflected in the haunting first trailer. The story follows a group of astronauts exploring Jupiter's moon, Europa, only for the situation to slowly deteriorate. Cordero was clearly influenced by such great deep space films as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris in establishing the film's tone, and it's not a stretch to say this looks like something Neill Blomkamp could have pulled off.

Europa Report hits VOD on June 27th, then theaters on August 2nd.
