First trailer for sci-fi rom-com 'About Time' with Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson

Past attempts to meld traditional romances with science-fiction have been met with decidedly mixed results, most notably in films like The Lake House and The Time Traveler's Wife. But those didn't have the benefit of boasting the talents of Richard Curtis, the writer/director behind the cherished rom-com Love Actually. Curtis' latest film, About Time, looks to be another light-hearted and funny charmer, only with a bit of time travel thrown into the mix.

The first trailer for the film is here, and frankly it looks like a standard romantic comedy, with a couple of passing references to the lead character's time-hopping. Domhnall Gleeson (Never Let Me Go) plays Tim, a regular guy who learns from his father (Bill Nighy) that his family has the ability to traverse time simply by entering a closet and thinking really hard about where he wants to go. So he decides to use this newfound power to fix romantic screw-ups and forge a lasting relationship with Mary, played by Rachel McAdams, who coincidentally starred in The Time Traveler's Wife. So this is pretty much old hat for her having men break the space-time continuum to be in her company. She must be awfully flattered.

This doesn't look too deep, even when discussion of the disastrous "butterfly effect" crops up it never feels like any genuine threat to Tim and Mary's happiness. But then again, why should we expect Curtis to deliver anything but a joyful rom-com? This could be a real treat when it comes out on November 1st. Just don't expect anything more than that.
