New clip from James Gray's 'The Immigrant' with Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner

It's been five years since Cannes favorite James Gray last hit the festival with his searing romance, Two Lovers, and now he's making up for lost time in a big way. Along with co-writing Guillaume Canet's star-studded crime film, Blood Ties, tomorrow sees the debut of Gray's period drama, The Immigrant, starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner. Not too shabby.

The 1920s-set story features Cotillard as Ewa Cybulski, a Polish immigrant who arrives at Ellis Island with her sister in search of the American Dream. Separated from her sibling and alone in the mean streets of Manhattan, Ewa falls victim to Bruno (Phoenix) a seemingly nice man who forces her into a life of prostitution. Renner plays Bruno's cousin, Orlando, who may be her only chance for salvation.  The first clip has appeared and looks to be of Ewa and Bruno's first meeting, captured beautifully in a vintage, sepia hue.

The Weinstein Company snapped up the rights awhile ago, and will likely drop it into the thick of the Oscar season.
