The final 'Man of Steel' trailer brings the heat
Prior trailers for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel have focused mainly on the internal conflict raging within Kal-El (Henry Cavill), his uprbringing with adoptive parents the Kents, and his quest to find a place in an unfamiliar world. Warner Bros. has gone a long way in focusing on these coming-of-age elements, giving the film a majestic quality none of the previous Superman films have ever had. But it's also come at the expense of the action, which we've only seen glimpses of up to this point. Nor have we really gotten a sense of the conflict between him and the evil General Zod (Michael Shannon), beyond just a desire for world domination.
The final trailer for Man of Steel is here, and gone are the images of growing up on a farm, replaced by the ominous present day threat posed by Zod. The evil Kryptonian's viral threat looms ominously over the footage, as he threatens: “Your world has sheltered one of my citizens. … To those of you who know his location, the fate of your planet rests in your hands.” As Zod rains down destruction on the planet, we see Superman in pitched battle against Faora (Antje Traue) who threatens to murder a million people for every one that is saved. The most action-packed and foreboding trailer yet, Superman's heat vision is unleashed in full and he finds himself buried under a mountain of skulls. I was beginning to worry that perhaps the film was too poetic and that it would be lacking in any serious physical conflict, but those concerns are now a thing of the past.
Man of Steel opens on June 14th.
