Matt Damon May Star in Tom McCarthy's Catholic Church Sex Scandal Film

We've seen Matt Damon tackle major social issues in his films a lot lately, from Green Zone to Promised Land, and even this summer's Elysium. Considering how closely Damon's kept to his hometown of Boston, it was really only a matter of time before the city would be at the center of one of them, and it may involve the sex scandal that ripped through the town's religious community.

The Wrap reports that Damon is being sought for the untitled film by Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, Win Win) centered on the Catholic Church sex scandal. Although he's yet to read the script, Damon is said to be the frontrunner for the role of Boston Globe reporter Mike Rezendes, who led the papers' Pulitzer Prize-winning articles chronicling the cover-up by Boston Archbishop Bernard Law, who was protecting priests accused of sexual assault. The script by Josh Singer (The West Wing) is said to be in the vein of All the President's Men and will center on all of the journalists investigating the scandal, their reporting having led to Law's resignation in 2002.

The story doesn't say whether Damon is actually interested, or if he's just at the top of their list, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Whether he comes aboard or not, the plan all along has been to find an A-list star to front the picture, although with a hot button topic like this it's going to have plenty of attention.
