'The Legend of Zelda' Pitch Teaser for a Film that Never Happened
As we've seen more and more video game companies bring their biggest franchises to the big screen, Nintendo hasn't been one of them despite having the most recognizable characters in the industry. And really, the reason why can be summed up in just a few words: Super Mario Bros. That dreadful film came out exactly twenty years ago and Nintendo has apparently never forgotten it. But that doesn't mean they haven't fielded some interesting offers.
Animation studio Imagi, best known for the surprisingly-awesome 2007 TMNT film and 2009's Astro Boy, approached Nintendo with a pitch to do an animated Legend of Zelda film. Nintendo would ultimately pass on it, and Imagi sadly closed its doors in 2010, but now we have the footage from that teaser reel, and its impressive enough that maybe Nintendo will consider a similar approach in the future. I can see why they passed on this one, though, as it doesn't look markedly better than the cut scenes from the Zelda games out during that time. Rather than risk one of their great franchises (they wouldn't even let Mario in Wreck-It Ralph, remember?), it was probably wise to wait a bit longer until it can be done right. It's still pretty cool to watch, so check it out below.
