Box Office: 'Insidious Chapter 2' Scares Off 'The Family' for #1
1. Insidious Chapter 2- $41.05M
James Wan has another low budget horror on his hands, just a couple of months after his $20M The Conjuring hauled in $259M worldwide. His latest film Insidious Chapter 2, another Blumhouse production, cost in the area of $5M has scored more than 8x that in its opening weekend. That's more than triple the $13M debut of 2011's Insidious, which went on to scare up $97M for its entire run. It's another small scale success for the Blumhouse studio, which also scored with The Purge earlier this summer. What follows next is the big question, as Wan has said he's done with horror for the time being, already having moved on to helm Fast & Furious 7.
2. The Family- $14.5M
Audiences said "fuhgeddiboutit!" to The Family, the mob comedy starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. While the $14.5M surpasses most analyst projections, it was soundly beaten by Insidious Chapter 2, and the 'C' Cinemascore suggests most weren't really digging another pseudo-gangster film. Considering it comes from French director Luc Besson, who has a fairly wide international profile, there's a chance that the film could do large business globally.
3. Riddick- $7M/$31.2M
Hitting $38M worldwide, Vin Diesel's Riddick has now reached the break-even point and should earn a decent penny for the rest of its run before cleaning up on DVD/Blu-Ray sales.
4. Lee Daniels' The Butler- $5.5M/$100M
Harvey Weinstein can now boast that his future Best Picture contender is part of the $100M club.
5. We're the Millers- $5.4M/$131.6M
6. Instructions Not Included- $4.2M/$26.5M
The Latino-themed family comedy continues to be the story of the early fall season, adding another 200 theaters and slipping only 47% in its third week.
7. Planes- $3M/$82.9M
8. One Direction: This Is Us- $2.4M/$26.8M
9. Elysium- $2M/$88.3M
10. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters- $1.8M/$62M
