Those who know Robin Weigert only as the drunken, stumbling, and decidedly un-sexy Calamity Jane from Deadwood may have a hard time thinking of her in an erotic thriller, but it may be time to put those notions aside. Her latest film Concussion premiered at this past Sundance, where she received high praise for her performance in the erotic thriller about a gay woman bored of her soccer mom lifestyle. After taking a knock on the head, she begins to try and turn things around first by paying for sex through Craigslist ads, then by becoming a high-end prostitute herself. Marking the feature debut by writer/director Stacie Passon, her career's off to a pretty good start having won a Teddy Award out in Berlin.
The first red band trailer has been released and it looks like a sultry, provocative film and a wonderful showcase for Weigert. It also looks like she'll share some powerful, combative scenes with Maggie Siff (Mad Men), who appears to be a client that Weigert's character gets a little too involved with.
Concussion was on my schedule of films to see at Sundance but I couldn't make it in time. That will definitely be rectified when it opens on October 4th.
