Derek Cianfrance to Direct 'The Light Between Oceans'
The first two features by director Derek Cianfrance have explored the familial ties that can bind and fray. Both films starring his frequent collaborator Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine looked at a happy marriage as it begins to crumble, while this year's The Place Beyond the Pines showed that the personal demons of the father are frequently passed on to the son. Now for his latest film, Cianfrance is taking on what is sure to be another unflinching family drama.
Dreamworks has announced that Cianfrance will helm an adaptation of M.L. Stedman's best-selling novel, The Light Between Oceans, and the premise sounds like it's right up his alley....
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.
Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.
While it's unclear if Cianfrance will be penning the screenplay, Harry Potter's David Heyman will produce for his Heyday Films banner. The director's schedule is pretty wide open, with only the HBO TV series Muscle on his list of things to do, so he could conceivably get to work on The Light Between Oceans pretty quickly. Here's a look a teaser for the novel....
