Mark Wahlberg and Rupert Wyatt Bet On 'The Gambler' Remake

One thing is for certain: Paramount really wants to be in the Rupert Wyatt and Mark Wahlberg business. Rumors continue to swirl that the Rise of the Planet of the Apes director could be the guy to take over Star Trek 3, while Wahlberg is currently running from giant robots in Transformers: Age of Extinction. Whether Wyatt takes over 'Trek' is still undecided, but it's clear what the studio wants him to do next, and it's a remake of 1974 drama, The Gambler.

Once set as another Scorsese/DiCaprio jam, they dropped out with The Hangover director Todd Phillips coming aboard in a very odd move. That version never developed, and so now we have Wyatt and Wahlberg, with the actor taking over the role that stands as one of James Caan's finest. Screenwriter James Toback based the story on his own battle with gambling addiction, and follows an English professor who keeps his problem secret as he goes further and further into debt, eventually getting mixed up with some dangerous people.

The updated version will be penned by William Monahan, who worked with Wahlberg, Scorsese, and DiCaprio on The Departed. [Variety]
