Box Office: 'Bad Grandpa' Overrules 'The Counselor' for #1

1. Bad Grandpa- $32M
Who would have thought that a narrative spinoff of the wildly successful Jackass franchise would come to be one of its biggest hits? Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa opened at $32M, the second highest debut in the series' history, and since it only cost $15M it's a huge win for Paramount and the Jackass gang. The film opened right in the thick of award season opposing more dramatic fare, and perhaps audiences had grown tired of the high-minded stuff and wanted something totally juvenile. Whatever the case, we're likely to see a sequel somewhere down the line, although it's unlikely the gang will start clipping alligators to their nipples again any time soon.
2. Gravity- $20.3M/$199.8M
Slipping into 2nd place after a few weeks at the top, Gravity is knocking at the door of $200M domestically and has hit $314M worldwide.
3. Captain Phillips- $11.8M/$70M
4. The Counselor- $8M
Brad Pitt. Javier Bardem. Cameron Diaz. Penelope Cruz. Michael Fassbender. Ridley Scott. Cormac McCarthy. And $8M. That's what audiences thought of that assemblage of celebrity firepower, giving the film a stinking 'D' Cinemascore to boot. This was always going to be a tough sell because, frankly, even the marketing couldn't hide how dark, ugly, and sort of ambiguous the whole thing was. This was a movie made for movielovers, not general audiences, and whenever that's the case this is how things usually turn out.
5. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2- $6.1M/$100.6M
6. Carrie- $5.9M/$26M
7. Escape Plan- $4.3M/$17.4M
8. 12 Years A Slave- $2.1M/$3.4M
Jumping up eight spots into the top 10 is the likely Best Picture favorite, 12 Years A Slave, which continues its slow rollout by adding an additional 123 theaters. The $17K per site average is tops on the entire chart, and suggests audiences are seeking the film out wherever they can find it, so expect this to do huge business when it goes national.
9. Enough Said- $1.5M/$13M
10. Prisoners- $1M/$59.1M
