International Trailer for 'The Immigrant' with Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner

For a film that boasts the talents of Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Renner we've heard surprisingly little about James Gray's The Immigrant. The roaring period piece debuted at Cannes to strong reviews, as one might expect, and when it was snatched up by The Weinstein Company the thought was it would be a sure entry into the Oscar season. However, that didn't happen and the film will instead open next spring when it will likely fly under the radar. It's unfortunate, because the new NSFW trailer is exquisite.

After some stirring words about the American Dream, the 1920-set film then begins to show why our shores aren't always so inviting. Marion Cotillard is Ewa, a Polish immigrant who arrives with her sister, only to be left alone and stranded. Desperate to be reunited with her sister, she falls under the sway of Bruno (Phoenix) and is forced into prostitution. Renner is Bruno's cousin Orlando, a suave magician (hence the heavy guy-liner) who may be Ewa's only hope for a better life.

The Immigrant opens in France next month and is expected to arrive here next spring. Fingers crossed.
