'Short Term 12' Director Destin Cretton to Direct Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Glass Castle'
If you've been reading this site or checking out my show Cinema Royale for awhile, then chances are you've heard me rave about a little film called Short Term 12. The Brie Larson-led indie drama took me by surprise a couple of months ago and now sits at the top of my best movies of the year. Beyond my hope that Larson will find herself in the Academy Awards mix, I had similar wishes for breakthrough director Destin Cretton, and while it may not happen for him this year, his next film guarantees a much larger platform to make his case.
Cretton will direct The Glass Castle, based on the memoir by Jeannette Walls that sat on the New York Times best-seller list for more than five years. Jennifer Lawrence has been attached for the lead role for more than a year as the project has taken shape with screenwriters Marti Noxon and Andrew Lanham. Cretton will take a shot at rewriting the script, which follows Walls' upbringing by abusive but eccentric parents. Her mother was an artist and excitement junkie who could barely spare time for her kids, while her father was a drunk who couldn't hold down a steady job.
It's unclear where this will fit into Lawrence's schedule, but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. Considering this is a Lionsgate project, the studio behind Lawrence's The Hunger Games, they'll do everything they can to accommodate her. [Variety]
