'Crazy Heart' Director Scott Cooper will No Longer Take 'The Stand'

Well, that didn't last long. Warner Bros. hasn't had any trouble landing big names to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. The problem has been getting them to stick around for very long. David Yates (Harry Potter) and Ben Affleck have been attached at different points, with Out of the Furnace and Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper coming aboard just a few months ago. And now he too has moved on.

The Wrap reports Cooper has exited the project, and the reason given is the usual "creative differences" chestnut we've heard so often. Considering the scope of King's story, which centers on the last survivors of a virus that killed 99% of the population, it's not really a surprise there are problems figuring out the best to approach the material. What is surprising is how many have just sort of given up.

The project remains a top priority for the studio so one way or another The Stand is going to happen, it's just a matter of when and who by.
