Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg to Reunite for Cold War Spy Thriller

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have a long history of working together, generally finding a good measure of success. Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can were box office and critical hits, while The Terminal wasn't as well-received. With Spielberg still looking for his next project, and attaching his name to another of possibilities, he's now considering a new spy thriller alongside Hanks.

Variety reports that Hanks is set to star in a Cold War-era thriller over at Dreamworks, with Spielberg circling the director gig. Based on a true story, Hanks would play James Donovan, a prominent American attorney hired by the CIA to get behind enemy lines and negotiate the release of captured pilot Gary Powers, whose U-2 spy plane was shot down in Russia.

It's certainly strong material that is in the Spielberg/Hanks wheelhouse, but there's doubt whether Spielberg will tackle it next. There's a chance he could finally get moving again on Robopocalypse, while there's also a Montezuma film, a West Side Story remake, and the recently-revealed drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Montara he could jump into.
