Warner Bros. Plans 'Scooby-Doo' Big Screen Reboot

Try to convince a producer today that a Scooby-Doo movie with Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, and Matthew Lillard is a good idea and they'll probably laugh in your face. Back in 2002 it wasn't so crazy, and their live-action film, directed by The Smurfs' Raja Gosnell and penned by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn, went on to bank $275M Scooby Snacks. The sequel, Monsters Unleashed, didn't do as well but it was enough to relaunch the franchise on TV and in straight-to-DVD animated features.

Warner Bros. is anxious to get the Scooby gang back on the big screen and have hired Randall Green to pen a brand new mystery as a franchise reboot. Basically they are starting from ground zero here, which should give them a chance to offer a new take on Scooby-Doo, Shaggy (originally voiced by the late Casey Kasem), Velma, Daphne, and her ascot-wearing boyfriend, Fred. There were two other live-action sequels with different casts that aired on Cartoon Network. The most recent was Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster which premiered in 2010.

What's unclear is if Warner Bros. plans for this to be a live-action or animated feature, and maybe we'll learn more on that when a director signs on.  [Deadline]
