Who says we need to wait until Marvel's Comic-Con panel for news on Avengers: Age of Ultron? Thanks to EW the floodgates have opened with early images and plot details on the film's robotic villain. Now there's even more info, only this time it deals with the sibling duo of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the android Avenger known as the Vision.
Joss Whedon's plans for the brother/sister combo harken back to their earliest appearances in the comics when they were on the side of evil, only now rather than being a part of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (20th Century Fox owns the rights to Magneto, so he's out.), they'll be aligned with Ultron...
Whedon: "They’re on Team Ultron, which makes things really hard for the Avengers because all of sudden they’re dealing with powers that they’re not used to....With the [first] Avengers, everybody pretty much had the power of being able to punch somebody. And now we have a woman who can get inside your head and move objects, and a boy that can move faster than anything, and a robot [Ultron] who can self-replicate and is out of his mind. So all of sudden, it’s a darker, weirder, tougher world that they’re living in.”
Because of his hyper speed powers, Quicksilver is known to be arrogant, irrational, and totally impulsive, but he's also fiercely protective of his sister. All of these traits will come into play in the film, as well.
Taylor-Johnson: "There's a lot of clashing. He's quick tempered. He gets agitated. He's impatient. But he's super protective. They're very yin-and-yang in that twin sense. In his power, he's physical and she's psychological. My character is very much on the frontline, but he can be quite emotional. You see this beautiful tenderness between them."
Another new character being introduced is the android Vision, only he'll be played by Paul Bettany, the voice of Tony Stark's computer system, JARVIS. Is there a connection? Of course there is. Is Whedon going to tell us anything about it? Of course he's not.
Whedon: "It's not coincidence. And I'm not going to tell you any more about The Vision."
Vision and Scarlet Witch become lovers in the comics and even have a pair of children together (don't ask how that worked out), and it will be interesting to see if that's a route Marvel takes further down the line. Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st 2015.
