The Joker and Parallel Worlds Teased in New Spots for 'Gotham' and 'The Flash'

Warner Bros. may be lagging behind Marvel when it comes to feature films but they rule on the small screen. This fall sees the emergence of two more DC Comics series that seem to be building up a serious head of steam. One is Gotham, which stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, and more in a sort of "Year One" version of Bruce Wayne's story. And then there's The Flash, a spinoff of Arrow and starring Grant Gustin as the Justice League speedster.

Two brief teasers have been released for both series, and they come with some surprises for eagle-eyed viewers. First up, the Gotham spot is very similar to the one we saw a few weeks ago with young James Gordon (McKenzie) entering a crime scene while colorful villains Fish Mooney, Oswald Cobblepot, Selina Kyle, and Edward Nygma eye him menacingly. But this one is slightly different and has a more overt reference to the Joker, Batman's arch-nemesis and undoubtedly a future villain Gordon will tangle with. Did producers think audiences missed out on the Joker reference before and decided to go with something obvious? Gotham premieres on Fox on September 22nd.

"My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive". Am I the only one who thinks every episode of The Flash should start with those words? It would be a nice nod to Mark Waid's beloved run on the comic, but also a good way frame the speedster as unique. Heroes with super speed are nothing new and so it's imperative to remind audiences there's nobody quite like Flash, and this teaser hints at a greater power within him...

"Inside your body could be a map to a whole new world".

Is that a reference to the Speed Force, which is kinda like the Force from Star Wars but used only by speedsters? Or could it be referring to DC's Multiverse, alternate worlds first discovered by the Flash more than fifty years ago?  DC uses the Multiverse frequently to tell many different kinds of stories without the burdens of continuity, although I don't know why they bother since they reboot everything every few years anyway. The Flash debuts on the CW Tuesday night, October 7th.
