Woody Allen Inks Deal with Amazon to Write and Direct His First TV Series

Let the streaming wars begin. Don't think it missed Netflix's attention that over the weekend Amazon's streaming service won two Golden Globes for Transparent, putting the series on the map for millions of people. And now Amazon Studios has scored another major feather in their cap by landing one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, Woody Allen, to helm his first TV series.

Amazon announced they've struck a deal with Allen to write and direct his first TV series which will arrive in 2016. A full season has already been ordered, although in true Allen fashion no plot details or casting is available and probably won't be for some time. Will Allen bring the series to his New York roots or stick with an international flavor like many of his most recent features?

Does this mean Allen's still-untitled film with Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix, due out later this year, will be his last for awhile? We'll see, but this is exciting news to see what Allen can do when given a wider berth with his characters.
