Bryan Cranston Sought for 'Star Trek 3' Villain Role?
So fans of Bryan Cranston didn't get him as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as had been hoped for, there may be something just as good on the way. With Simon Pegg and Doug Jung confirmed to be writing the screenplay for Star Trek 3 with Justin Lin directing, a new rumor has surfaced that suggests Cranston could be "breaking bad" against the Enterprise crew.
According to Film Divider, a bunch of new characters are going to be introduced, with most of them females. But the one major new male character is the villain, and they "have had words" with Cranston about taking it on. While there's no guarantee he's even interested, adding Cranston would be a good way to keep up the level of Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as Khan in Star Trek into Darkness. Plus it's unclear if the character would be someone from continuity or brand new. Either way, expect the identity to be kept a secret because JJ Abrams and Bad Robot are still on board as producers.
As for the female characters, the unconfirmed story says they will include a new female starship captain; the President of the United Federation of Planets; and most surprisingly the ex-wife of Bones McCoy, played by Karl Urban. How she could possibly fit into the story is anybody's guess but if it gives Urban more screen time then it will be a good thing.
We'll see if any of this shakes out, but it's definitely a good idea to bring a few more strong female characters to go along with Zoe Saldana's Uhura. Star Trek 3 opens July 8th 2016.
