Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien' will End Ripley's Story and Ignore Last Two Films
Here's hoping Neill Blomkamp doesn't get tired of answering questions about his Aliens sequel. Just last week it was announced that the Chappie director would be bringing his vision of the Ridley Scott franchise to the big screen, weeks after he excited fans with some amazing concept art. Perhaps the most notable image featured Sigourney Weaver in her iconic role as Ellen Ripley, and now Blomkamp confirms she'll be returning. He tells EW...
"It did have to do with having Sigourney [Weaver] on 'Chappie.' It’s just something that I’ve always wanted to one day be a part of.....Over the years, I came up with a story for a film in that universe that I wanted to make. And then when I talked to her about her experience making those films and what she thought about Ripley and everything else, it informed and changed the film I wanted to make into something different."
Also featured in that image was Michael Biehn's Corporal Hicks, still dealing with the effects of the alien acid burns he suffered. Will he be back, too? That much is unclear, but based on comments made by both Blomkamp and Weaver, we could be seeing the end of Ripley's story. She told Sky Movies that Blomkamp's film, which is separate from Scott's Prometheus franchise, will give Ripley "a proper ending". To do that Blomkamp is ready to completely disregard the continuity of Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, which nobody really liked anyway. Blomkamp says...
“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Alien.' So it’s ‘Alien,’ ‘Aliens’ and then this movie.”
Basically it's taking a similar route as Terminator Genisys, which is pretending Terminator Salvation didn't exist. There doesn't seem to be anybody complaining about that and doubtful there will be much of an uproar over Blomkamp's plan.
