It would have been very easy for Phil Lord and Chris Miller to simply ignore the litany of hilarious fake sequels seen at the end of 22 Jump Street. And why wouldn't they? While undeniably funny, they did more to poke fun at the silliness of movie sequels than anything else, which made things weird when 23 Jump Street was actually confirmed some months ago. But rather than simply pretending the extended gag didn't happen, the directors are going to give all of those phony follow-ups a legit place in the franchise.
According to a story at Slashfilm and first reported by Topless Robot, Lord and Miller plan to make all of those sequels part of the 'Jump Street' canon. How in the world are they going to do that?
“We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet,” Lord said. “The sequels are canon.”
Given that Sony is looking at a crossover with Men in Black, one has to assume it will somehow factor into how all of this could work. In an interview with MTV, Lord gave one brief clue, saying writer Rodney Rothman "had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of 22 Jump Street and do something that hadn’t been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story."
The Jump Street flicks were already pretty wild, but now they're getting flat-out insane. How long before Sony just decides to merge their entire library into one big crossover universe? We could see Jenko and Schmidt tangling with Spider-Man or something. At this point nothing is out of the realm of possibility.
