A 'Need for Speed' Sequel Shifts into Gear

Have you forgotten Need for Speed already? Not the video game, but the movie inspired by it? It arrived last year and was positioned as the beginning of a blockbuster franchise and Aaron Paul's first shot as a leading man. How'd it do? Uh, it barely got out of the starting gate with only $43M domestically. However, it kicked up a ton of dust internationally with $159M, and that means we're getting a sequel.

THR reports that video game publisher Electronic Arts is teaming up with Chinese producers China Movie Channel, Jiaflix, 1905.com on a Need for Speed sequel. What's up with that? Well, the film did the bulk of its business in China, so they're catering to its most favorable audience. Then again do they have Cinemascore in China? Do we know all of those people liked what they paid for?

No word on who is coming back, but this has the stench of a cheapie sequel with no returning stars. Surely Dakota Johnson is too busy haggling over her next 'Fifty Shades' paycheck, and Paul probably wishes Need for Speed never happened. Anyway, expect to hear more soon because filming begins later this year.
