Sundance is more often than not a place where new talents are discovered, but sometimes it's also where unappreciated veterans get a moment to shine. The always reliable Blythe Danner had such a moment earlier this year when Park City crowds caught her in the drama, I'll See You In My Dreams, and now the first trailer has arrived to show us what all the buzz was about.
Directed by Brett Haley and starring June Squibb, Sam Elliott, Martin Starr, Malin Akerman, and Rhea Perlman, the film has Danner as a widow who has settled comfortably into her age and quiet lifestyle. That all changes when a series of events force her to get back out there meeting new people, making new friends, and possibly finding a new love.
This looks like the kind of quiet, sophisticated dramedy that would earn a lot of awards notices if it were coming out later in the year. If the early buzz is anything to go by we could still see Danner as a contender, and if not it's just good to see her getting some time in the spotlight. It actually reminds me a lot of a similar film from two years ago, Hello I Must Be Going, which featured Danner in a supporting role. I'll See You In My Dreams opens May 15th.
