At this point there isn't a lot of novelty in the annual romantic offerings from Woody Allen. Sure, he may throw a zing to the rom-com formula with Midnight in Paris or throw a supernatural curveball like Magic in the Moonlight. But in general, we know to expect neurotic, troubled men who have their lives flipped around by a beautiful woman. And that's what we're getting with Allen's new film, Irrational Man.
Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone star in the Cannes-bound film, which centers on a college professor who falls for one of his students. There's a serious complication there that is subtly hinted at in the new trailer, but overall this looks like a platform for how gorgeous Phoenix and Stone are as a screen couple. It doesn't hurt that cinematographer Darius Khondji is back and giving Allen's film the beautiful sheen we're accustomed to.
Also starring Parker Posey, who looks like a real winner here, Irrational Man opens on July 24th.
