Noticeably absent from the recent Suicide Squad cast photo was Jared Leto, which was fine because you can't go on Twitter without someone posting an image of his ever-changing hairstyles to play the Joker. But now David Ayer is making up for his absence with a new image that Batman fans will immediately recognize as an homage to Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, which many see as the definitive Joker story ever written.

So why post this image? Could it mean elements of The Killing Joke will be used in Suicide Squad? The story presented Joker as a tragic figure, a failed comedian who agrees to help a gang of criminals as a means of supporting his pregnant wife. In the process he is horribly disfigured after a run-in with Batman.
Or maybe it's just a tip of the hat to longtime Bat-fans? Suicide Squad opens on August 5th 2016.
