Craig Johnson to Direct Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern in Daniel Clowes' 'Wilson'

Forget superhero movies for a second, and think about the best comic book adaptations ever produced. Chances are 2001's Ghost World will end up near the top of the list, as well it should. The film captured perfectly Daniel Clowe's brilliant, somber, and funny serialized comic, earning an Oscar nomination for the screenplay. We haven't seen one of Clowes' works adapted since 2006's Art School Confidential, which wasn't very good at all, but now there's another adaptation on the way that already looks promising.

Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern are set to star in a big screen version of Clowes' graphic novel, Wilson, with Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) directing. The project has been in the works for a few years, most often teased by producer Alexander Payne, but now it's moving forward with Clowes writing the screenplay himself as he usually does. Harrelson will play the title character, an opinionated, angry, middle-aged misanthrope who goes off in search of his drug-addicted ex-wife (Dern) to re-establish their relationship, only to learn of a daughter who was given up for adoption.

With Sam Raimi also on board as a producer, there is some serious talent behind this one. Filming is gearing up to begin next month. [THR]
