David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike to Star in Amma Asante's Racially Charged 'A United Kingdom'

After guiding Gugu Mbatha-Raw's breakout performance in last year's Belle, director Amma Asante is set for another racially-charged historical romance. According to THR, she will direct David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike in A United Kingdom, a drama centered on the romance between South African royal Seretse Khama and his English lover.

Written by Guy Hibbert (Eye in the Sky), A United Kingdom will star Oyelowo as Khama, a member of the royal family in Bechuanaland, a former English colony and south African nation that would one day become Botswana. In 1947 he sparked outrage in apartheid South Africa by marrying Ruth Williams, a white English woman, during a time when interracial marriage was illegal. While the South African government failed to depose him from his chieftainship, they exerted pressure on the British government to have him banned from his home country.

So lots of potential here for another powerful look at race and romance. No word on when filming on this would begin, but it will have to wait for Oyelowo to wrap up on a couple of projects first. This would be a reunion for Oyelowo and Pike, who co-starred in Jack Reacher opposite Tom Cruise.
