While you're not likely to find the kind of vehicular action already experienced in Mad Max: Fury Road and Furious 7 for the rest of the year, Jon Watts' thriller Cop Car hopes to siphon off a bit of their audience. The film stars Kevin Bacon as a corrupt cop whose car is stolen by a couple of rowdy kids. So why doesn't he just call it in? Because there's something rather incriminating in the trunk, and Bacon...plus his mustache, go on a wild goose chase to catch the little thieves.
The first trailer for the film has been released and basically it's a microcosm of the problems I had with it at Sundance. There's a great idea here, and Bacon is more than up to the B-movie task, but the thrills are modest at best and the story is constantly spinning its wheels and going nowhere. That's part of the reason why I couldn't be bothered to kick out a review.
Cop Car opens on August 7th.
