Tilda Swinton to Mentor Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton in the same movie? No, it's not some prestige drama slated for the Oscar season. It's going to happen in Marvel's Doctor Strange. That's right, Tilda Swinton is now part of the Marvel Universe.

THR reports Swinton is in talks to play Strange's mentor, the Ancient One, in the film directed by Scott Derrickson. That means the character is undergoing a pretty significant change, going from male to female, but the change is worth it to bring aboard an actress of Swinton's talents. Hopefully this won't rile up the fanboy purists whining about a woman in the role. Ken Watanabe, Morgan Freeman, and Bill Nighy had been rumored for the role late last year.

The Ancient One was an all-powerful Tibetan mystic and the Earth's "Sorcerer Supreme" before taking on Dr. Stephen Strange as his student. Teaching Strange the supernatural arts, he eventually passed the mantle on to him before dying, although he's still able to be summoned from the astral plane.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4th 2016, with filming set to begin later this year.
