The Diary of a Teenage Girl has been referenced by me in passing numerous times here, and reviewed glowingly by me as well, and in every case it's all about the breakout performance by Bel Powley. The teen drama gained a lot of buzz at Sundance and set Powley on a course for stardom, and now the first trailer is here to show what this tough coming-of-age drama is all about.
Also starring Alexander Skarsgard and Kristen Wiig, the film centers on Minnie Goetze, a teenaged girl looking for acceptance, love, and more by beginning a sexual relationship with her mother's boyfriend. The trailer may suggest just another fanciful teen film, and there are many times that it is, but this movie goes to some truly dark places. If you ever saw the film Thirteen then consider this kind of a companion to that.
Directed by Marielle Heller, The Diary of a Teenage Girl opens August 7th.
