Watch Bella Thorne in the Bloody First 8-Minutes of the 'Scream' TV Series

Every horror franchise runs its course eventually, and Wes Craven's Scream may have been groundbreaking at one time but it crashed hard with 2011's Scream 4. So rather than trying to extend the series' life on the big screen, MTV have decided to revisit the self-aware horror on the small screen. The Scream TV series debuts on the network next week, and today they've released the first 8 minutes featuring Bella Thorne (The DUFF) in a role similar to Drew Barrymore's from the original movie.

Of course, this is a modern update so Thorne's character is all over the texting and social networking, until things start going from sexy to violent. While many of the promos have had a hard time finding a proper tone between scary and comedic, this extended glimpse is effectively tense and surprisingly brutal. And that Ghostface mask? Definitely a step in the right direction as the original mask has become too closely associated with comedy at this point. 

Scream premieres on June 30th at 10pm on MTV.
