Box Office: 'Ant-Man' outscores 'Pixels', 'Southpaw' and 'Paper Towns' deliver solid Debuts

1. Ant-Man- $24.7M/$106M
Marvel's Ant-Man isn't going to the studio's strongest box office performers, but it's proving to be a solid hit for the B-list hero. The film has earned another $24.7M for a $106M domestic haul, while the worldwide total has reached $226M. The next couple of weeks are going to be tough, though, with Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation and another Marvel movie in Fantastic Four on the way.
2. Pixels (review here)- $24M
My honest opinion of Pixels going in was that this could be the one film Adam Sandler couldn't ruin, because it had so many childhood favorite video game characters that it would still be fun. As other critics, who savaged the film while I found it decent, noted in their reviews, Sandler is the one thing that actively hurts it. And as Pixels opened to a mediocre $24M, it may be that Sandler's presence stopped the film from doing better. He's built up such a negative reputation at this point that audiences are taking steps to avoid his movies, even when the concept is as playful as this one. On the other hand, it racked up an additional $25M overseas for a $49M worldwide haul, which isn't bad for an $88M production budget. It may be that Pixels ultimately performs decently overall, but it may be these dwindling returns that drove him to a 4-picture exclusive deal with Netflix. His last feature for awhile will be this fall's Hotel Transylvania 2, so really Pixels is the last time he'll be seen on the big screen for a stretch.
3. Minions- $22M/$261.5M
4. Trainwreck- $17.2M/$61.5M
Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow's R-rated rom-com Trainwreck slid 43% for another $17.2M, giving the film $61.5M after two weeks. It doesn't appear to have been hurt by the recent Louisiana shooting that took place during a showing of the film.
5. Southpaw (review here)- $16.5M
Boxing movies don't always make the cut at the box office. They tend to fare better in the long run rather than the short term. Southpaw, a film that was developed as a starring vehicle for Eminem before Jake Gyllenhaal took over the lead, got off to a solid start with $16.5M. The Weinstein Company has been pushing this as a potential Oscar-contending performance by Gyllenhaal, while the marketing has been targeted mostly at young men who love boxing, pro wrestling, and MMA, which isn't surprising. It seems to have paid off for the $30M feature, as the debut ranks as one of his best for a non-franchise film.
6. Paper Towns (review here)- $12.5M
The latest teen adaptation of a John Green book is Paper Towns, and it comes with considerably less buzz than last year's The Fault in our Stars. For one thing it's much less starry with Nat Wolff and supermodel Cara Delevingne (who will be in Suicide Squad next year) the two biggest names, and the book simply isn't as highly regarded as 'Fault'. Fortunately, the $12.5M opening immediately recoups the meager production budget, and it has earned an additional $7M overseas. This was always going to be a low-key release and it is performing exactly that way.
7. Inside Out- $7.3M/$320.3M
8. Jurassic World- $6.8M/$623.7M
Marvel's Avengers  just got whooped by a bunch of dinosaurs. Jurassic World earned another $6.8M for a domestic total of $623.7M, moving past The Avengers. With its $1.53B worldwide total, it is now the third highest-grossing film of all-time, both domestically and globally. James Cameron still holds the top two spots with Avatar and Titanic, and they are in no danger of losing out on those anytime soon.
9. Mr. Holmes- $2.8M/$6.4M
10. Magic Mike XXL- $1.8M/$63.1M
