Brie Larson is held captive in the emotional first Trailer for 'Room'

Many have known Brie Larson's comedic gifts for some time thanks to roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The United States of Tara, and 21 Jump Street, but it was in 2013 at SXSW that she first displayed her dramatic range with the indie darling, Short Term 12. Now as the Toronto International Film Festival is gearing up, Larson is set to make her next big dramatic move with Room, and a chilling trailer for the adaptation has been released.

Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Frank, one of my favorite films of 2014) and based on the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue, Room centers on a woman and her 5-year-old son who have been held captive in a single 10x10-foot room for years. When they finally manage to escape, getting reacquainted with the vast world around them proves to be a struggle.

The trailer is an emotional powerhouse with stark images of happiness, fear, and deep despair. William H. Macy, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen, and Sean Bridgers co-star, while Donoghue adapted the screenplay herself to help keep it as close to her novel as possible.

Room debuts at TIFF this September, and if it does well don't be surprised if A24 rushes it out for an awards season release.
