Genie from 'Aladdin' to get a Live-Action Prequel from Disney

Released in 1992, Disney's animated Aladdin is still one of their most beloved films, and has taken on new resonance with the recent passing of Robin Williams, who provided the unforgettable voice of the Genie. Fans of the film may need to get used to another voicing the character as they're moving ahead with a live-action prequel titled Genies.

Penned by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (the Friday the 13th remake), and produced by the same folks behind the recent-announced Prince Charming movie, Genies is said to explore the realm of the genies and explain how the blue-skinned Genie became trapped in the lamp. If the film is a hit, Disney hopes to build a franchise that will lead to a live-action version of Aladdin.

No director is attached yet, and with a growing roster of live-action retellings Disney can take their time on this one. [THR]
