Mel Gibson Joins Chinese WWII Film 'The Bombing' as Art Director

There's no denying that the acting roles have begun to dry up for Mel Gibson, and that he doesn't have the clout to mount his own studio features anymore. But at least he's not giving up totally, and has found an interesting new career path. Gibson has been confirmed as art director for The Bombing, the big-budget Chinese production directed by Xiao Feng.

Also starring Bruce Willis, Song Seung-heon, Nicholas Tse, and Liu Ye, the 3D feature is based on the bombing of the city of Chongquing by Japanese forces during WWII. The city served as the provisional capital of forces commanded by Chiang Kai-Shek.

Gibson has long had an interest in that event and the time period, saying that this trip to China would be his first in twenty years....

“I have seen so many changes in China,” he said. “”The Bombing’ has an excellent world-class team with outstanding producers, directors, cast and crew. Our crew is marvelous, modest but enthusiastic.” [Variety]
