Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, and Mark Ruffalo challenge the Church in the 'Spotlight' Trailer

Few would question the ability of writer/director Thomas McCarthy to craft a heartwarming tale about misfit characters and oddball family situations. This is the same guy who earned acclaim for smaller films like The Station Agent and The Visitor (Richard Jenkins should've won an Oscar, f'real), before moving on to other successful projects like Win Win and Pixar's Up. But then he began to branch out, and the results weren't so good for films like Disney's Million Dollar Arm or the dreadful Adam Sandler comedy, The Cobbler (which our own Rocky Hadadi famously gave a '0.5' score).

Now McCarthy is taking on his most serious film to date in the Catholic Church scandal film, Spotlight, which was recently announced as part of the prestigious TIFF lineup. Starring Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, John Slattery, Brian d'Arcy James, and Billy Crudup, the story centers on the real-life Boston Globe journalists who helped crack a child abuse scandal within the Catholic Church.

This could be the comeback vehicle McCarthy needs as it is surely being positioned as an Oscar contender. Spotlight hits theaters on November 6th.
