Rob McElhenney takes Over as Director of 'Minecraft'

Interestingly, on the same day that Shawn Levy was hired by Warner Bros. to direct their upcoming Minecraft movie, Rob McElhenney was over at Legendary Pictures inking a deal to direct the family adventure, Figment. And now with Levy having departed Minecraft, here's McElhenney stepping in to take his place on the building block flick.

The news was announced on the Mojang official site, with this statement from COO Vu Bui:

“Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.”

Warner Bros. picked up the film rights to the best-selling video game after cashing in big on The Lego Movie, with plans of building up another block-based franchise. McElhenney is one of the creators of FX's sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which was recently renewed for seasons 11 and 12. No word on when Minecraft could begin filming, or if it will interfere with McElhenney directing Figment.
