Lost in the hype of 20th Century Fox's Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse presentations at Comic-Con is Josh Trank's Fantastic Four. The much-maligned film, which reportedly saw Trank's behavior cause friction with producer Simon Kinberg, presented one final trailer to the packed hall of geeks, and while it seemed to be well received there's no doubt it lacks the buzz of other major superhero flicks. Can anything change that before the film hits theaters next month? Maybe not, but Fox is giving it a go by releasing that Comic-Con footage now. They've also revealed an additional trailer featuring more new footage.
Starring Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Susan Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, and Toby Kebbell as Doom, the film takes a dark, grounded, Chronicle-esque approach to Marvel's "First Family" of heroes. While not as superhero-y as Marvel's Avengers movies or DC's line, that style failed with the previous Fantastic Four movies so it's hard to fault Trank for going in a different direction. For what it's worth, all sides seemed to be in good spirits at Comic-Con, and Kinberg has gone out of his way to refute claims of any trouble.
Recently a rumor surfaced that Fantastic Four will no longer be shown in 3D, but that has yet to be confirmed. We'll find out when the film arrives in theaters on August 7th.
