New Posters for 'Suffragette' Celebrate Emmeline Pankhurst Day

The name Emmeline Pankhurst may not be well-known here in the U.S., but today in the U.K. they are celebrating Emmeline Pankhurst Day. Named one of the most influential people of the 20th century, Pankhurtst was a prominent British activist and the unquestioned leader of the suffrage movement, fighting for women to gain the right to vote. Meryl Streep is set to play her in the upcoming drama, Suffragette, and in honor of Emmeline Pankhurst Day four new posters have been released.

The images, appropriately labeled with the tags "Mothers. Daughters. Rebels", reveal the film's three biggest stars: Carey Mulligan, Helen Bonham Carter as activist Edith New, and Streep as Pankhurst. Penned by Abi Morgan and directed by Sarah Gavron, the film follows the working women who became soldiers in the early feminist movement, battling against an increasingly brutal government.

Also starring Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Natalie Press, Romola Garai, and Anne-Marie Duff, Suffragette opens in limited release on Oct. 23rd, then goes nationwide Thanksgiving Day.
