Luc Besson has been angling for an adaptation of French sci-fi comic, Valerian, for a number of years. However it was only until a couple of months ago that the $180M project finally moved forward with the additions of Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) as the leads. This is already Besson's most ambitious effort in a long time, and now he's getting a little more help by adding the reliable Clive Owen to the cast.
Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is based on the graphic novel by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, which is set in the 28th century and follows a government temporal agent named Valerian, who has grand adventures across space and time alongside Laureline, a peasant girl from the 11th century. Owen will play Commander Arün Filitt. Besson scored huge with his sci-fi action hit, Lucy, but this will be his purest take on the genre since The Fifth Element way back in 1997. As for Owen, he's no slouch either, having starred in the stone cold classic Children of Men.
Besson plans to finally get filming early next year. Owen can be seen next on Showtime's series, The Knick, when it returns this fall.
