Catherine Hardwicke to Direct Joey King and Charlie Plummer in 'Stargirl'
Catherine Hardwicke has taken multiple approaches to exploring the difficulties of being a teenage girl. After the raw, unflinching drama Thirteen she went in a much glossier direction with a pair of YA-skewing efforts in Red Riding Hood and Twilight. And this seems to be her favored approach, because she's tackling another such adaptation with Stargirl, an adaptation of Jerry Spinelli's best-selling novel.
Coming aboard to lead the film are rising stars Joey King and Charlie Plummer. The story centers on an unconventional teenage girl who enrolls in an Arizona high school and wins over the student body, only to have them eventually turn against her. King will play Stargirl, while Plummer is Leo, the boy who falls in love with her and narrates the story.
It's probably unfair to label King a "rising star" at this point considering all she's done since starring in Ramona & Beezus. She's been in everything from The Dark Knight Rises to Crazy Stupid Love to Oz the Great and Powerful, and has Roland Emmerich's Stonewall later this month. Plummer had a recurring role on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and was close to landing the Spider-Man role before it went to Tom Holland.
Next up for Hardwicke is the dramedy, Miss You Already, starring Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette. [THR]
