Godzilla vs. King Kong is Happening as 'Kong: Skull Island' Moves to Warner Bros.

Bridges rarely stay burned in Hollywood. An enemy yesterday could be your best friend tomorrow, and that seems to be the situation with Legendary Pictures' CEO Thomas Tull and Warner Bros., with the producer taking his studio over to Universal around the time of Pacific Rim's release. Legendary's next blockbuster is the King Kong film, Kong: Skull Island, and at the time it was announced the expectation was that it would obviously lead to some kind of crossover with Godzilla. Now that epic clash of the movie titans moves one step closer to reality.

According to Deadline, Legendary is taking Kong: Skull Island back over to Warner Bros. in an effort to facilitate a Kong vs. Godzilla showdown by having them under the same distributor. What does this mean for Universal? That much is unknown but presumably they'll be compensated nicely for allowing this move to happen. The film has been a little slow getting off the ground, but director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has assembled a great cast with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, and Jason Mitchell, while Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Wilkinson, and John C. Reilly are expected to have roles.

As of now, Kong: Skull Island is currently set for a big IMAX 3D release on March 10th 2017, but that could all change now with a new distributor. As for a Godzilla sequel, it's pegged for 2018 after Gareth Edwards wraps up his Star Wars: Rogue One, and after that we'll see this rumble of the ages finally take shape.
