Rob Marshall to Direct a 'Mary Poppins' Sequel for Disney
With Disney intent on revisiting all of their past classics in some way, it was only a matter of time before they got back around to Mary Poppins. Sure, they gave us Saving Mr. Banks only a couple of years ago, a look at the real-life tale of how author P.L. Travers really didn't want her book turned into a movie. So it's a wonder how she'd feel about a sequel, which is developing now with Chicago and Into the Woods director Rob Marshall on board.
According to Variety, Marshall will direct a sequel to the 1964 Disney musical, set 20 years after that story ended, placing it some time in the 1930s. The plan is to take elements from all eight of Travers' books about the magical nanny and her continuing adventures with the Banks family. EW adds that David Magee (Life of Pi) will write the script, and there will be new music from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) with a little help from Richard Sherman, who did songs for the original.
So who's going to try and replace Julie Andrews in one of the most iconic roles in Disney history? With Disney's slate pretty booked up for a while, there should be plenty of time to figure that out.
