Casting Shortlist Emerges for 'Power Rangers' Reboot

It's been more than two decades since the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were on the big screen, but unlike that film Lionsgate's upcoming reboot won't feature actors from the various TV shows. Instead it will be made up of an entirely new cast, and a shortlist to play those colorful Rangers is starting to come together.

According to Variety, the role of Zack aka the Black Ranger could be played by Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life), and Brian “Sene” Marc. That's right, the Black Ranger won't be played by an African-American this time, a change that could annoy the traditionalists. Vying for the role of Jason the Red Ranger are KJ Apa (Shortland Street), Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) and Mitchell Hope (Descendants). Naomi Scott (The Martian) and newcomer Stephanie Scott are up for the role of Kimberly the Pink Ranger, while The Wrap throws AnnaSophia Robb, who starred with Butler on The Carrie Diaries, into the mix. Robb would be the biggest and most proven name by far, someone Lionsgate could build a promo campaign around if necessary.

No word on who could be in the running to play Trini and Billy, the Yellow and Blue Rangers, respectively. There's still lots of time as the film doesn't open until January 13th 2017 with Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) directing.
