Think it's a coincidence Summit has released the first trailer for Allegiant today, exactly one week before The Hunger Games franchise wraps up with Mockingjay? Of course not. What's amazing is that the Shailene Woodley-led Divergent series is on its way out, too, even though it began a full two years later which gives you an idea of the blistering speed these movies have been produced. Based on the final book in Veronica Roth's best-selling trilogy, Allegiant has been split into two films as Tris (Woodley) and Four (Theo James) attempt to save their faction-based society by venturing into the dangerous world beyond their borders.
The last film, Insurgent, ended with Tris and her companions exploring the dangers outside of their walled-off version of future Chicago, and now we're getting a look at some of the terrible truths that have been revealed. Unfortunately this trailer gives away the entire mystery in a couple of lines of dialogue from Jeff Daniels, one of the new additions to the cast. It also appears that Four has a new potential love interest (Nadia Hilker) in case he's gotten bored of running and blowing stuff up with Tris.
Directed by Robert Schwentke and co-starring Naomi Watts, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Octavia Spencer, and more, Allegiant opens March 20th 2016. It will be followed by Ascendant on March 24th 2017.
