Chances are you've seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens by now, and if not, what the Hell are you waiting around for? You definitely won't want to keep reading here because of SPOILERS, but those who have seen it will want to stick around because lots of cool little details keep spilling out that only enhance the experience.
There's a key scene in the film that occurs, maybe about halfway through, when Rey (Daisy Ridley) has what can only be described as an "awakening". It occurs just as she's discovered the lost lightsaber of the missing Luke Skywalker on the planet of Takodana. At that point Rey experiences crucial flashbacks and begins to hear a voice, or more accurately voices, and J.J. Abrams has confirmed some of those belong to Yoda, voiced by the great Frank Oz, Obi Wan Kenobi, voiced by the returning Ewan McGregor, and through some clever editing you also hear Alec Guinness' voice in there as the older Obi Wan. And of course, Mark Hamill's Skywalker can be heard, too. Abrams tells EW...
“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could...“You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in ‘Empire.’ And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey … these are your first steps,’” Abrams revealed. “Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”
But don't think this means Rey's backstory has been completely revealed, or that Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan even knows what any of it means!
“We’re hoping Rian Johnson can figure that out,” Kasdan joked. “We were really stymied!”
