'Jurassic World' Congratulates 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' For Breaking Box Office Record

Never underestimate the true power of the Force. The box office estimates on Sunday had Star Wars: The Force Awakens nearly breaking every single record it could. It blasted away all of the single-day records and easily surpassed Jurassic World's domestic weekend haul with a massive $238M. The only record it didn't break was the global opening weekend record of $517M held once again by Jurassic World. Well, the final numbers are in and the dinosaurs are once again extinct.

J.J. Abrams' Star Wars film opened with $528M worldwide when all was said and done. So bye-bye Jurassic World! What's incredible about this is that it hasn't even opened yet in China, which is one of the largest markets in the world. The upward momentum it has is remarkable and who knows how much it will earn in the end. James Cameron better look out.

The team at Universal were pretty cool about losing the crown they held for about six months as producer Frank Marshall sent out this congratulatory tweet. There are some pretty close bonds between the two franchises. Colin Trevorrow is directing Star Wars: Episode IX and producer Kathleen Kennedy used to work alongside Marshall and Steven Spielberg. As long as there's money being made everyone's happy!
